One Should Understand Normal Blood Glucose Level To Remain In Control

Glucose is the major source of energy for the body. When you eat food rich in carbohydrates it gets converted into sugar and travels through the bloodstream. The glucose is used by the cells to carry out the different body functions. Amount of glucose in blood is governed by the hormone known as insulin. Normal blood glucose level is maintained which is useful for the body is ensured by insulin. Complex health problems or some diseases can caused by high or low amount of anything.

Normal blood glucose levels

To be able to keep glucose levels under control you need to know what the normal blood glucose level is. Normally glucose levels are at lowest in the morning before your first food intake. They increases only after you eat anything. However, they must be in the insignificant range of 80mg/dL to 150mg/dL (i.e. 3.9 to 8.3mmol/L). There is temporary increase in level to 150mg/dL after food intake.

If your chronic blood glucose levels below 70mg/dL then it is a characteristic of low blood sugar or hypoglycemia. It is warning for you of hyperglycemia or high blood sugar or diabetes if the levels go beyond 150. You should consult the doctors to verify the results as high blood glucose does not always mean diabetes. Excess level or very low levels of blood glucose can cause damage to your body. The effect of high level is nerve damage, kidney damage and very low level effects in mental functions and loss of consciousness.

Blood glucose test and their normal ranges

To understand whether your blood glucose levels are within the range, you can undergo some tests that would give you the actual measures.

* Fasting blood glucose test: This test is taken 8 hours after fasting. The normal blood glucose level for this test is advised at 110mg/dL or 6.1mmol/L. If it is more than 126mg/dL after two consecutive blood tests you may be suffering from diabetes.
After two hours you take any food this postprandial test is conducted. The measurement of the level should be less than 120mg/dL or 6.6mmol/L which is standard The level usually comes down to under 100mg/dL or 5.The result was 5 among non diabetics after two hours.
* Random blood glucose test: The random test as the name suggest is taken at any time. The normal range must not be higher than 200 mg/do or 11.1mmol/L1mmol/L.

The oral test that helps measure your body’s response to sugar is oral glucose tolerance test. The process is measuring your fasting blood sugar first and then drinking a glucose solution. The glucose level is measured again after two hours. This test must also levels below 140mg/dL or 7.8mmol/L.
The glycated hemoglobin (A1C) is a useful test to measure your control on diabetes over a certain time. It shows your average blood sugar for the past three to five weeks. Sugar coated hemoglobin’s percentage is given by it. The standard levels are 4 to 6 percent without diabetes and lower than 7 percent with diabetes. Its level should be under 6 percent during pregnancy.

The level of blood glucose may goes high or low in children also. Parents need to be conscious of the normal blood glucose levels for their children so that they do not suffer from the ailing effects of high or low blood glucose levels. Whether one is diabetic or normal everyone is required to maintain their blood glucose levels in normal range for a healthier life.
